Sarah’s hand closed around the Polaroid so hard the edges cut her. The new mom (Katie, her name was Katie) kept smiling like nothing was wrong. Behind her, the three kids were already tracing the walls with their fingers, leaving faint red streaks. Sarah opened her mouth to scream a warning, but the words came out as a cheerful “Congratulations on the new house!” in her own voice, not her choice. Katie beamed. “You should come to the housewarming tomorrow! We’re doing a ‘70s theme, super retro!” The youngest boy looked up at Sarah with eyes that flickered, just for a second, milk-white. He whispered, “We’re gonna need a bigger cake.” Sarah felt invisible ribbon tighten around her throat.
